US video game sales increased by 52%

U.S. sales of video game hardware and software rose 53 percent in June from a year ago, with Konami Corp’s “Metal Gear Solid 4″ helping to fuel a dramatic increase in the number of Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 units sold, market researcher NPD reported on Thursday. “Metal Gear Solid 4″ claimed the top slot as June’s best-selling game, overtaking the two month reign Take-Two Interactive Software Inc’s “Grand Theft Auto 4″ enjoyed since its launch in April. The Konami game is made exclusively for the PS3. PlayStation 3 console sales jumped 94 percent from the prior month. U.S. consumers bought 405,500 PlayStation 3 consoles in June, up from 208,700 consoles in May.

“Exclusive content usually fuels hardware system purchases and PS3 sales certainly reflect the impact of Metal Gear Solid 4,” NPD analyst Anita Frazer wrote in the report. PS3 unit sales hit a record for a non-holiday month, she said. Nintendo sold 660,000 Wii consoles during June, a slight decrease from the 675,100 Wiis sold the month before. But the Wii’s solid sales have secured its spot as the best-selling video game console in the U.S. of the current generation of machines. The console has sold 10.9 million units since its November 2006 release. “The Wii appeals to people of all ages, generations and ability, and more and more new consumers continue to discover the Wii,” Cammie Dunway, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America, told Reuters.

Microsoft sold 219,800 Xbox 360 consoles, a 17.8 percent increase from May. For the first half of 2008, the U.S. video game industry has generated $8.3 billion in sales. This is a 36 percent increase in sales from the same period a year before, indicating that the sluggish economy is not hurting the industry’s performance as people turn to home entertainment, NPD said.

It’s quite ironic, when all publishers and developers cry foul about piracy, yet the Industry is turning over more money than God and is likely to increase for sometime.

It appears we are being charged too much for hardware and software, if they just keep getting richer… ;)

@1 you need to pull your head out of your arse and join us in reality. The reason for the increase is that the medical community has found out that these help in rehab after a surgery or injury. The Senior centers and nursing homes clearly have shown that they help in keeping the members active and interested in life.

So take your USA hating nonsense someplace else as it is becoming very tiresome and clearly showing your level of intelligence, which is to say not that high from observing your posts.

    @8
I don’t think that would have mattered much actually… for the PS3 its more about having any big exclusive game come out like MGS4 or GTA IV. That what it needs boosts sales of course.

I don’t think it matters much which of the games it is though and and I don’t think both games exclusive to the PS3 would have mattered much. The first big one pushes the hardware sales basically is what I’m saying.

Buying exclusives is not an option for Sony at the moment anyway… not with they competitor having almost twice the installed base.

when people play video games and don’;t move out, they don’t think just follow. that’s what the u.s. administration needs to easily control the masses.

they need no smart people and a new brainwashed generation start to vote. good for them, bad for the whole world.

So America is the land of the fat huh? PUH-LEAZE! have you ever seen Canadians on the beach in Florida? They go around with 200 pounds plus on hips and butt and then wear these thongs and speedos. I have seen Europeans that have come here to shop and sunbathe that are so fat that overhead planes mistake the light shining off of their white skins for large high intensity landing lights and that 4X is the smallest size they can buy.

point being us that you have fat people in every country so before you start calling Americans fat, maybe you should start taking a look at YOUR country as I would bet that there are quite as many if not more fat people there then here. And before you say sh%t again, maybe you should start dealing with your own “chubby chunkies” first and once you have your fat people taken care of and no one in your country is considered fat by your medical people, then and ONLY then will you have the right to say something about someone else.

Don’t any of the Americans here give any thought to WHY American bashing is such a popular past time?

Rather then just preempting the all-too-common “The US SUCKS!!” comments, why don’t you try and think about WHY so many of us make them, rather than just getting all defensive, convincing yourself that WE’RE the ones with the skewed perspective and then going back to your fridge/video games.

From a non-gaming UK citizen who doesn’t like you.

Despite Common Nonsense blathering it does not change the fact that Americans are the most obese people on the planet, per capita. Sure many countries have fat people but Americans are by far more obese than most. If it’s down to gluttony, lazyness and inactivity or (and I stifle a laugh here) “genes” this kind of news does nothing to instill confidence that things will change. All it shows is even more Americans are just sitting around playing video games and less and less are actually going out and doing anything physical.

Look I don’t like it any more than you do but just lashing out at “everyone else” is not going to make the home truths go away either.

A lot goes into why we are the fattest, and not all that long ago, fat was considered healthy, a sign of a flourishing economy. In any ways it still is.

The fact is, fast food is to blame. Its cheap, its everywhere, and the meal sizes are huge. This is stuff you shouldn’t eat but maybe once a month. Yet because of hectic schedules and the ‘I want it now’ attitude that plagues all of mankind, people are eating it more than twice a week.

Just wait, obesity levels are up all over, and it coincides with fast food becoming more of a factor in every country. If you offer a filling meal for $3-5, and the alternative is nearly $10, its inevitable that people will choose the meal that is designed to be tasty, and cheap.

Awww, seems that 29 and 30 are ticked off that I stated fact. I get the BBC on my Sat and you should see the FAT EUROPEANS sunning themselves like beached whales, and stuffing doughnuts and fish’n'chips into their holes like there is no tomorrow. And let us not forget the English PM talking about the EU’s increase in health care because of heart attacks and the rate of fatty foods and cholesterol. Sounds to me like you have just as many fat people or more per capita then we do.

And I know why you dis the US every chance you get, because you are jealous. We dont answer to anyone and we dont have inbread morons that you call royalty, trying to tell us what to do. Bush is not the brightest light in the lamp, but compaired to your leaders, he is a genius. I mean get real n00bs, even WE are not stupid enough to try and give human rights to monkeys and plants like you people in Europe are doing.
