Text messages behind 6 million injuries in UK

Chatting and texting on the cell phone accounted for about six million injuries in Britain last year, according to a new survey. William Ostrom of phone directory service 118118, which conducted the survey 1,055 adults, revealed that many subjects admitted to getting hurt crashing into lampposts, bollards and bins while texting or talking on their mobiles. The injuries ranged from cuts and bruises to broken noses, cheekbones, and even a fractured skull.

According to the surveyors, 63 per cent of people get immersed in sending SMSes so deeply that they become forgetful about their surroundings. The surveyors also said that one-forth of the people surveyed would support “mobile lanes” on pavements to highlight the increasing number of hazards, while about 50 per cent would back the use of protective pads around them. “Britons are clearly text addicts so we need to make sure they are protected on the streets,” British tabloid The Mirror quoted Ostrom as saying. I guess it’s still better to be hurt while texting than die after your cell phone explodes

    Gee, thanks you idiots for posting misleading bull. Surveys cant show cause and effect relationships, so wtf are you trying for?!

    Anybody who has 1/10th of a brain and took some form of Psychology in its most basic form (highschool level) can tell you that surveys are only good at manipulating public opinion…

    Mobile Lanes ???

    What ever next. What happened to good old fashion Common sense ?

    Personally I think you should be allowed to trip up people texting without fear of punishment from the law.

    They should learn to text without looking at their cell phones, like they do in India.
    A guy’ll be talking to your face and texting at the same time.

    Mobile lanes? That’s giving into the sheer laziness of the info junkies. How about just passing much cheaper laws which fine or imprison people for endangering public safety by their actions?

    “Mobile lanes?” How about… stop where you are, write the damn text message, send, then go about your life!

    The fact of the matter is, mobile phones and mp3 players DO distract you from your surroundings. I only use mp3 on a train or bus or sitting down or whatever, NEVER when I am crossing streets or railways… people have been run over because of Mobile/mp3 distraction.

    I’m sure the americans will make up some illness to justify this type of behaviour like “MDA” (Mobile Device Addiction), which in Europe will just be called “Stupidity” as usual.

    @7

    I agree, like what most people do here in the philippines (Texting capital of the world), we usually text without looking at our cellphones… call it text addicts hehehe

    I totally agree with this survey. I have personally walked into quite a few trash cans and even a park bench once while I was texting. The bench really messed up my knee.

    Mobile lanes would be a great idea, and probably wouldn’t cost more than a few million at most. Definitely worth the injuries they would prevent.

    And it is easy to say wait until you are in an area that is free from obstacles to text, but sometimes you don’t know when and where you will get a text message.

    If “mobile lanes” come into existance, I’m giving up on humankind and staying indoors for the remainder of my life.
