Target won’t sell Manhunt 2

I told you this game is problems! On the heels of criticism over its violent content, the video game Manhunt 2 will not be carried by Target. Since its release date was revealed, Manhunt 2, a video game that chronicles the ultraviolent killing rampage of an escaped sociopath from a mental hospital, has stirred worldwide controversy for its violent imagery. “All video games and computer software sold at Target currently carry ratings by the Entertainment Software Rating Board — from early childhood through mature audiences,” the statement said. “While ‘Manhunt 2′ was given a ‘Mature’ rating by the ESRB, we received additional information that players can potentially view previously filtered content by altering the game code. As a result, we have decided not to carry the game.”

It’s a big blow, in the sense of that’s a place where people are buying lots of games. As a result, it’s going to reduce the number of people that will see it. When the original version of the game was tagged with an “Adults Only” rating, which most stores refuse to carry, the video game’s publisher, Take Two, blurred out the more violent images in the game to achieve a less restrictive, more consumer friendly Mature rating. Take Two came under fire, however, last week when consumer groups criticized the game, because the blurred portions could be unlocked. Hackers playing the game on PlayStation Portable could manipulate the code to reveal the more violent, originally censored scenes.

Why did the developers need to even program the violent scenes in the 1st place?

    For their own amusement?

It will be a ‘blow’ for the retailer as this gives the public a feeling of censorship being dictated to by a outlet. It will be a shame for the public who do not have an alternative to purchase the title from.

This game gets treated like this, but other, just as violent if not more violent games get overlooked by the media. In F.E.A.R you can blow people’s heads off, no one said a word. The soldier of fortune games were uber violent, no one said a word. The new SOF game will be the most violent, gruesome game ever created and no one will say a word. It seems like Rockstar is the whipping boy for the games industry, and that’s not fair at all.

We go to war, every time a foreign country gives us a dirty look. Yet, we cannot sell a game that is violent, and disturbing? I don’t see the logic,.. maybe if there was more killing simulations, then americans would grow up actually wanting peace. Just burns my butt to think that stores would reject the idea, of making money off of a video game… but yet support the president and his retarted war. Just my 2 cents.

This is stupid, it’s just a game, they think that because some kid got killed they immediately blamed it on Manhunt cause by coincidence it might of been in the kids room (along with Barbie, why didn’t they ban that game!). I’ve been playing violent games since i was young and it has in no way influenced me to kill someone.

I say that more kids are now going to go out and purposefully buy this game because it’s been in the news. Then we will have a new wave of crazed pubescent teens to slaughter people.

Games like this are just stupid.

I’m confused, I thought as long as things don’t have sexual content, it’s just fine to sell in the United States. It’s the rest of the world that dislikes violence (middle east excluded) while the U.S. thrives on it. The rest of the world likes sexual content (especially those whacky japanese) while the U.S. and it’s ultra-insane-right-wing-religious-nutjobs get sexual content banned every where.

Anyways, at least Wal-Mart is carrying it.

Im at a loss as to why there is so much controversy over a game!!!
Its a game for gods sakes, i mean look at the saw movies. Uber violent and no one seems to have a problem with that because its a movie!!!

Bottom line is though all this publicity is still good news for the devs, makes my want to buy it even more even though the first game was pretty rubbish in all honesty.

I don’t the biased attitude toward video games, it is a violent game it should have been given the M rating without blurring out the so called violence, I have seen much worse in R-rated movies Hostel,SAW for example and that is live-action as compared to cgi as is the case with manhunt2, why doesen’t target ban these movies as well, effin hypocrites..

@2 agree with you 100 percent rockstar are the most popular thats why they are getting hammered

People, especially in Amercia, learned a way to always blame someone else. So now, so called parents blaming entertainment industry for teaching kids violence when it’s theri fault and no one elses.

I’m 100% positive someone will sue Take Two over violence in a matter of days upon releasing the game.

    Damn hypocrites. :(

It does seem very strange. Manhunt 1 had all the visceral gory images, including decapitations, cheesewire garotting & grisly stuff involving pickaxes. Manhunt 1 is still on general release, and anyone over 18 can buy it. Why is Manhunt 2 so different?

Clive Barker’s Jericho has much more disturbing visuals. OK, it’s supernatural/phantasmogorial or whatever, but still, the premis is the same, and just as violent

Personally, irrespective of the graphics, Manhunt is a pretty good stealth game. Not quite up to Splinter Cell, but so much fuss has been made about the graphics….

….and I bet most of the people causing the stink haven’t even seen the actual content, or probably until the controversy started, had never even seen a videogame before!

Yes, Manhunt 1 & 2 are grisly. So are Hostel & Saw, yet there is a market for gruesome stuff, and believe it or not, most people CAN distinguish the difference between fantasy & reality!

  34. gorby
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:10

@33. sociopaths…. are they born or made? If u say these games don’t affect kids minds, then u gotta say nothing does, or u gotta prove where the line is drawn.

Sure a f-d up family will affect a kid.. that’s extreme, but bullying also affects a kid and that’s not so extreme.

so where do u draw the line? So if u say games DONT affect kids, you gotta prove it… who’s studied it with these extreme kinds o games? They’re only just coming out, so the answer is no-one! therefore, we don’t know! nobody knows!

I mean there’s p#rn, and then there’s way way f-d up p#rn, kiddy p#rn, stuff that we can all say is just wrong.

If they included a kid in this game – the kid killing, or a kid being sliced up…. what then? Is that the line? And why is that the line? Why isn’t plain sadism itself the line?

I swear, it’s like we’re just curious little monkeys playing with fire all the time. Weapons, war, money, drugs… whatever us monkeys can get away with. One day we’re gonna see the results of all our foolin around and have to start cleanin up the mess.

    Poor monkeys..

    oh ffs, it’s simple.

the more violent our society – and the more unsafe we feel – the more violent the entertainment. It’s a coping mechanism.

It makes us feel “OK” about the world around us. F’d up things happen all the time, we all know it, and it worries us. Wars worry us, homeless ppl worry us, but we try to ignore it all.

We watch violent movies, play violent games.. it makes us feel more in control.. we don’t like feeling weak and defenseless like we actually are – we don’t wanna know that. We wanna be heroes, capable, in control.

In reality, some drunk jerk driver can waste you tomorrow. You can get sick and die. Anytime, anywhere. We’re not safe and it scares us.

We play games not to escape life, but to help cope with how screwed up it is.

    That’s my theory anyway.

    @gorby

games affecting kids would be a great discussion to have when it’s a game aimed AT KIDS…this is clearly aimed at Adults, Rockstar games are almost always aimed for the Adult market…

it’s morons like you that keep this ooh “kids will be turned by this game” attitude when it’s not the fault of Rockstar (or any other game developer out there) who want to make games for the biggest growing market there is (Adults just in case you were not paying attention)

the M for Mature rating and an 18 in the UK (where it’s still to even get a release date, if that will ever happen) is one that should have been given to this without even looking at it (Rockstar would have told them that)

it’s quite annoying being an adult that likes these games (that deal with fictional ideas) rather than the games that deal with other fictional ideas (the difference in the 2 types of fiction is that I’d rather be beating the life out of a thug than jumping on some sort of animals head to kill it…)

the censors need to pull their fingers out of their ears and the blindfolds away from their eyes and just keep every form of media on a level playing field. and remembering that Adults exist too.

I simply can’t understand why stores in USA refuse to sell some media content if it gets some ratings? In Europe our store always sell everything regardless of rating. There are not only children on this planet…

USA looks like a country for little kids where even adults are treated like that.

@gorby when does parental responsibility come into play? There’s obviously a market for people who wanna play this type of game. If they pick up a crow bar and start putting it through the back of peoples necks after they play then what’s to stop them from getting set off by there favorite beatles song?

Now when it comes to children I can understand the argument that it can warp there minds (understand not agree) but if they’re old enough to hold the controllers in there hand and manipulate it well enough to play through the game chances are they’re old enough to know the difference between real life and fantasy/right and wrong and if they’re too young to understand these concepts then what in the holy H3LL are their parents doing letting them play these games?
