Nintendo Wii launch in New York

The long awaited event, launch of next gen console Nintendo Wii, took place in New York today. The final new games console launch for 2006 has occurred, with the Wii and PS3 joining the Xbox 360 as consoles now launched in the US, the only territory where this has occurred so far. Nintendo’s Wii was launched at the Toys “R” Us store at Times Square in New York by Nintendo of American President Reggie Fils-Aime to big crowds. There have been no reports of unruly crowd behaviour, no shootings or other mayhem at the Nintendo launch that took place not long ago, with hundreds of thousands if not millions more Nintendo Wii’s available across the US than was the case for the PS3.

Initial reviews have been as complimentary to the new Wii as all of the pre-launch reports, with the Wii sporting a truly unique control mechanism, despite the PS3 also offering their own motion sensing technology with the PS3. With so many more Nintendo Wii’s available at launch, at a much lower price point that the Xbox 360 or the PS3, many more people will be able to calmly purchase a Wii today and leading up to Christmas, something that obviously can’t be said for the PS3. Therefore, the Wii is really mostly duking it out with the Xbox 360 for Christmas season sales, with many existing Xbox 360 and other console owners likely deciding to buy one anyway, not only for the uniquely different gaming experience, but for the fact the Wii is a powerful Internet connectable console of its own. I wouldn’t wonder if this black horse won the expected next-gen console battle…

Personally i am going to get a Wii once they are over here in the UK, although the ps3 and Xbox360 are great machines and have some nice looking games, i just kinda feel that they are just trying to offer what my PC already does.

The Wii will be something different and hopefully fun at a decent price.

I fully support the last sentence.xbox 360, ps3 its the same as a top pc.But wii offers something different at affordable price’s.Wii will be or the biggest inovation of video entertainement or a gigantic flop. But i sure of one thing I WANT one…

Wii will offer something new. Something new, but that new will lack that something that will make it ‘the big thing’. So its going to be a success, but not a breakthrough.

well, i’d like one too… but, unfortunately, here in Brazil the price will be, converting to dollars, around U$1100… and that’s quite outrageous!!! if i had all this money i would buy, but i ain’t that rich! taxes, taxes and more taxes!!!
Wish i could go to the US to buy one! -_-

another battle at our hands here…technology came a long way for these consoles, but still not match for a computer game.

    sinangel,
    1100 dollars? Goodness, that’s ridiculous!
How much do you Brazilians pay for an iPod or something the like?!?

The ps3 is a cheap blu ray player, but that is also the one thing that might cause the blu ray to fail, the price of the players is far to high for the majority of people to spend on something that will just be used to play movies.

Blu ray will never be the next main format with stupidly high priced players. But if they reduce the price of the regular players they will lose part of the justification for the high price of the ps3.

    sordid,
well, one iPod Nano 1GB here costs around U$300 – 350, if you buy it legally! That’s why piracy and contraband grow so much here! 1100 for a Wii? hahaha… not even 1% of the population here can afford it. I think it’s because the Wiis that are gonna be sold here come from the US.
