MIT flashed a bulb remotely

Science is advancing everyday and the new feather in the cap came from the researchers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) when they made a 60 watt bulb glow by sending energy wirelessly from a device 7 feet away. The hottest discovery by the MIT researchers was in print on Thursday in Science Express, the online periodical of the journal Science, and is being called “WiTricity” by the scientists. The concept is not new-flanged, as in the past, some attempts similar to this have been made by many researchers, but the idea was kept at bay due to the argument that electromagnetic energy generated by the charging device would emit in all directions.

The truly new step, described in the paper in Science, was that the MIT team carried the concept out. It was able to light up a 60-watt bulb that had “no physical connection” with the power-generating appliance. On the other side of the coin, the MIT researchers are not fully successful as a large amount of the energy from the charging device doesn’t make it to the light bulb. The new research has paved the way for gadgets to work without being plugged. Wires have always been a source of interferences- They muddle the view, get snarled behind desks and limit how far networks can reach. That’s the reason why radio made telegraph extinct, landlines got replaced with cell phones and Wi-Fi set free computer data. Kind of cool, isn’t it?

wasn’t tesla doing this sort of stuff 100 years ago? can u say technology suppression?

  2. June 10th, 2007 | 19:30

this is truly pathetic. Tesla was doing this exact thing 100 years ago, he even created the first wireless control device (a model boat) . I would of not posted this to tech news due to the fact that it is old news.

Your head between two wireless electrical device ? Cancer in the air… :(

Pathetic? In what way? Tesla never managed to build it, he only invented the concept. He never solved some of the most important issues, as to how the energy should have been transfered… He tried to transfer energy in it’s raw form (just like lightning), but that was way to unstable and dangerous… What the team at MIT have done is more or less harmless (as far as they know)… You can stand in between the coils and it wouldn’t harm you physcially in anyway. Might be some kind of radiation that will give you cancer or whatever, but it will not give you an electrical shock like the coils Tesla used =D

Yes thats true about Tesla. He was from Croatia, and you should also know that this so called M.I.T. team is not from USA but Croatia also! So that you dont get confused… ;)

Yes and I remember watching a documentary where Tesla could clone Top Hats, Cats and Magicians. And he looked like David Bowie!

Well, it is considered as tech news and IT IS new as Menion commented. But, hell, who wants to get cancer just to decrease the number of electricity cables?!

I hate the cables in the living room where I manage to connect (PC+VHS+Audio system+satellite reciever+Sony playstation+TV) all together.. IN and OUT for each device. That’s where I thought of such technology but, I new that electricity will go all arround the place causing seriuos diseases.

can you please MAYBE stop posting stupid crap guys

i mean its not like we have a friggen alternative

so stop wasting our time with your stupid opinions you silly euros

60% of the energy was lost and the whole idea is quite not home-ready – both emiter and receiver (and only those 2) have to be in an exact resonans frequency at the same time. (previously it was achieved by high em field and close distance). So we’ll have to wait few years… But where the idea came from just rlz:D – guy always forgot to charge his mobile so he invented a way to charge it without the cable – it’s like wtf… why not ?:D:D:D

isnt it great that so many ppl are such experts in this field!
one random post on random website and out of 12 replies like half of them are some pros when it comes to electricity and its history..
    oh the internet!

Tesla was born in Croatia, but he was Serb :P

I don’t care whether Tesla was a Serb or a Croatian, he was way cooler than any of us.

Great, why not put MORE types of crap in the air? And they wonder why everbody gets cancer or people go crazy for no reason.

I like cables, so suck it MIT!!!

@ Hopyh – Stfu ok, you don’t know what you’re talking about. European people are far ahead than anyone else when it comes to science and technology, so woopty fucking doo for you Mr. I’m-too-cool-to-join-Europe, I guess YOU’ve just proven yourself to be the silly person here.

I for one want to see where this goes. Transefering electricity wirelessly could revolutionalize technology. Ofcourse its far from ready but still nice feat.

Anything that comes from MIT is overhyped for the media. Everyone from high school physics has learned that you can create transmit electric power through a magnetic field in the air. There have been many implementations of this such as my electric toothbrush being recharged without touching any wires. This is typical MIT which comes out with 100 year old science and claims it is new.

@ Huuba: yeah intenet is cool… tho I kinda study physics @ AGH science univesity … I wanted to cool it down a bit cause it’s really gonna take few years to run it @ home… Feeling stupid now?

no im not feeling stupid now. I was saying that so many ppl are such experts always online when it comes to anything pretty much..not saying some ppl arent :)
ppl just read smtn, google/wikipedia it and post then to look smart, thats all.

Why are most people that reply so hostile?…

First Tesla. Yes he thought of it years ago, so? should we have have just lauded Da Vinci and stopped any work on airplanes just because he thought of them?

Now cancer. Yup, we ought to just not bother with this technology just because CANCER, aaaaaahhhhh. Have you done tests on it? Do you know what harm does it do?… Lets investigate. I mean its not like they are going to be putting these things all over the place in a couple of days. Let research be done. (Plus CRTs emit radiation, have you guys stayed away from them? It all depends on quantity dosen’t it?)

  28. LeFF
    June 12th, 2007 | 09:50

Yeah it does, tho lcd’s also emit radiation, the older one’s can be even more dangerous than new crt. Hell… Your mobile can make You an impotent tho if You look at it in this way everything that tastes good or makes You happy is very baaaad… Even sex if You’re older than 70 :D :D:D

@Crimson: I know nobody sane who wants to be a physics teacher:P just that some times media tend to make a big story out of something ordinary.
