Microsoft dropped price of Zune to $249

Microsoft’s portable media player, the 30GB Zune, will be released on Nov. 14 with a suggested retail price of $249. This is a $50 drop from earlier reports. According to TWICE, the Zune’s price point is a shot across the bow of Apple, which just announced a new 30GB iPod also priced at $249. Other key differences between Zune and Apple’s iPods/iTunes system include:

  • The Zune has Wi-Fi capability.
  • Zune offers two pricing plans: $.99 per song or $14.99 monthly subscriptions.
  • It comes with a built-in FM tuner.
  • Zune has a sharing feature that beams a song to another Zune player and makes it available for a three-day trial period.
  • The unit is pre-loaded music, videos, film shorts and images.

And because a portable media player can’t survive without accessories, TWICE reports that a selection of speaker and car add-ons will also be released in time for the Nov. 14 launch. Should we consider this as a first useful product from Microsoft ?

I really really REALLY hate to say this… but, I guess MS is doing a good product of this Zune, I just hope that this thing don’t get Vista-hard-linked so we can use with more OSes (like Linux) and also than can support a wide range of file formats (specially the open/free ones)

2 snow: there weren’t any interesting releases today and if you would list back, tech news are quite common part of this site…

and yeah, i also hope this will be a good product, may be not really iPod killer, but good direction in Microsoft’s production.

I like having an alternative to an ipod, previously i had a zen touch form creative but it’s getting to the point where i think i might get something fresh.

Martin, here’s a cool release out there, Final fantasy XXII and Scarface the game. I’m taking them for ps2.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this info about zune. Ok it’s microsoft and I have an iPod, but the screen is amazing the videos are cristal clear, and I have to take the train every day so yeah, FM radio + video + MP3 for 250$ is cool for me.

thanks for comment therapix, but I will probably keep this weblog to PC stuff for now, partially because I don’t own any console and partially because I really don’t know too much about what’s good and what isn’t…

Please continue to post items like this one. I appreciate the updates and especially like that they’re brief, informative and not filled with useless advertising spin.

    Keep up the good work!

Looks ok, but unless they release a version with a HD at least 80 GB it won’t interest me much. Even my 80 GB iPod is full w/ just tunes, making video playback useless.

maybe in time clock2113, but it is based around 1.8″ HDD’s which are pretty limited in size. Hopefully see an 80GB model at some point but unlikely to see anything larger than that IMO.

Just delete some tunes off your ipod and you’ll be fine. How many tunes can you be into at once? ;)

Regardless of all the technology available nowadays you still can’t beat a am/fm cassette recorder price wise , thats what i always rock. :P I might be a little bit too old fashioned, but i like things simple. Next time you think about dishing out $200+ dollars think about how cheap you can experience music with a little old technology. Sure it doesn’t have all the modern stuff on it, but i really doubt you need to watch videos on a portable media player. Anyways this does seem like a superior product than the ipod, it really bugs me to see all those people with their white headphones thinking they are so cool.

lol i was talking about a portable cassette player not one in a car

  17. yeah
    October 4th, 2006 | 01:23

uhh he’s implying that cassettes are huge and you’d need a pick up truck to carry the equivalent amount of music a more modern device holds.

ah i didn’t catch that, :( , but cassettes still kick ass imho, guess its a matter of taste

cassettes kicked ass in utility and portability for so long, the have reached sort of a golden place on the shrine of kickassery, yeah. :) but they just don’t meet the demands of modern entertainment anymore. until someone mods some big ass harddrive player into one of those, that is…

    as for the zune.
it’s a pity that such nice hardware is crippled by stupid DRM implementations… it will even DRM’ your own files and everything that’s license free. it will even break files that fall under CC license and this is a NO-NO… microsoft, you managed to FUBAR. until someone hacks this wonderful gadget, i will refrain from buying it and this is also what i will tell my friends.
