iPhone Dev Team Jailbreaks the iPod Touch 2G

Today the iPhone Dev Team released the long awaited jailbreak for the iPod Touch Second Generation. There were some tethered version for the Touch, but today they released the untethered version. This means the jailbreak will remain if you restart your iPod. I’ll explain a small how-to for windows users since I don’t own a mac:) . I haven’t tried it out yet myself, but all the results from others are promising. I’ve included 3 links below, you need all 3 to complete the jailbreak. An easier solution will probably be released too, but this one ain’t hard either:). Enjoy!

    What's up with iPhone? I mean, it is called iPhone, so it should be personal, so I can put any sim card, from whatever provider I want, from anywhere in the world.

    Apple suck at this point.

    Jailbreaking the iPod Touch means hacking into the ipod, then you can put custom themes icons sounds and stuff also free apps its well worth doing and ive found no risks so far. its easy to do aswell

    What are the pros of jailbreaking an ipod 2G.. Doesn't it void the warranty.. What special things can u do with it??
    Sorry, I just bought my 2g ipod and dont get the jailbreak thing yet.

    Jailbreaking allows you to install apps such as a video recorder–oh wait, the iPod Touch doesn't have a camera… Ok, it allows you to tether it to another device to use its 3G connection–no, again, it doesn't have a 3G radio…

    Well, you can install custom wallpaper/icon themes. Plus there's some unofficial apps that are only available to jailbroken devices.

    For now jailbreaking is more useful for iPhones (especially for video recording & tethering).

    Eventually more software that Apple won't authorize (like porn apps) will become available to all jailbroken iPod Touches/iPhones.

    Sure it'll officially void your warranty, but you can always restore it to its previous state, or wipe it to factory settings if you have problems. Installing any new software update will un-jailbreak it, too.

    Is there a way to change the drive of an ipod touch? i only found solutions for the "old" ipod… thx

    at #26.

    Yeah the custom wallpapers and icons sound tempting, I've seen how they look on the 1st gen, but would I still be able to download updates if I needed it, and download regular apps?

    The "drive" in an iPod Touch is a couple of Flash RAM chips soldered to the main board (same as an iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle). Technically it may be possible to change those chips, but it wouldn't be cost-effective. The iPod Classic uses a standard micro hard drive that's relatively easy to swap out.

    @Dr Manhattan

    iPod Touches and iPhones can still have their firmware updated after they've been jailbroken, but doing so will un-jailbreak it. Usually the new firmware also blocks the previous jailbreak methods, too, so the jailbreakers then need to find a new way to do it and release new tools.

    Any jailbreak that prevents regular apps from being downloaded and installed on an iPod Touch or iPhone would be considered a failure, so by the time the jailbreak methods go public they make sure it doesn't cause that to happen.

    If you are using windows to jailbreak your ipod touch 2G, the quick and easy way is QuickFreedom. Took me about half an hour. Here is the program:
