Apple opens iPhone App Store

Apple on Thursday launched the App Store for the soon-to-be-released 3G iPhone, making a major push at becoming a key player in what’s expected to be the next generation in computing. The online store coupled with the media player-smart phone hybrid completes the company’s platform for a ubiquitous connection between an ultra-portable computer and the Internet. “The iPhone is not a phone. It’s a connected touch-screen computer that goes into your pocket and just happens to make phone calls,” said Michael Gartenberg, analyst for Jupiter Research. Apple entered the market in a big way by introducing through the App Store about 500 applications for the new iPhone, which goes on sale Friday at 8 a.m. local time. For people with the slower original iPhone, Apple on Thursday released firmware version 2.0, which is the same operating system as in the new device.

For $9.99, people can load the OS in the iPod Touch, which is the iPhone without the phone. People can also access the App Store by downloading version 7.7 of the iTunes software, which also was released on Thursday. The latter makes it possible for iPhone buyers to deploy software from their Macs or PCs. In being able to offer hundreds of applications on the first day the 3G iPhone is available, Apple has shown that developers are onboard. About a quarter of the App Store software is free, with 90% of the paid software available for $9.99 or less. Apple, which must first approve applications before they go on sale, takes 30% of the revenue generated from paid software, but does not charge developers offering free applications. Available software includes games, educational program, mobile commerce, and business productivity tools. A third of the applications are games.

I hate the iPhone… the iPod… almost everything from Apple. I have a Kyocera m1000 and it does everything I need. Those who own an iPhone are extremely ADD or ADHD or are just the type of person who wants to show off.

You said that apple released the firmware for older iphones, that’s incorrect at this moment in time. Yes, 2.0 firmware did get leaked but apple certainly did not publically release it.

I’m neutral with the apple products. They’re good but there are others just as good and even better out there…

The average person who wants a iphone just wants it to showoff..and the sad thing is not to show off it’s “features” but to just to show that they own one..which is sad…

Why? It has no real way of videoing the $199 price doesn’t mention the $250 per month contract that is the deal where I live. An 8 gig iphone costs $250 a month if you ‘buy’ it for $199 if you want to own without a rip off 3g contract it costs over a grand for a phone that a Nokia sh*ts all over and that is no better than the $100 chinese clones which prolly come outta the back door of the same factory that the iphone goes outta the front door.

Plus the big one for those of us who like most peeps, and not just those who look/act like us. If you buy a Nokia which is made in finland there is less worry that the profits will be used to kill peeps just goin about their business.

If you think all an iphone is, is just a phone. Its lost on you. Go back to your nokia or razor or whatever you have, you’ll never get it.
Now if you look at it like a GPS iPT (ipod touch) that has the app store behind it, 1000′s of global developers, all the enterprise features, and just happens to be able to make phone calls too….then you might get it. And by get it, i mean clue in.

Have you haters ever even tried using an iphone for a while? Seriously, once you use one, it raises the bar so much you just can’t go back. I sold my old one ebay a few weeks ago to buy the new one when it comes out. I’m using my old razr and it is pure torture, even though I used to love it, the UI just sucks in comparison.

Just to set the facts straight, I have used iPhone and I still think it is lame against something like the HTC Touch Dual. Now that’s a conputer in your hand that is lightweight and has TouchFlo interface nad can seriously make a call while also being able to send a picture message – just another simple feature other “true” smart phone users take for granted!

I agree, the only the Iphone has better than alot of phone, is the marketing company behind it!!! the phone itself really doesnt compare to the likes of the Samsung i900 (for example). They are callin git ground breaking ???? A 2meg camera that doesnt capture video?? no front camera?? no card slot for extra storage, removable battery anyone??, No MMS technology for sending pictures and video. And the most important of all……DIVX SUPPORT!!! i really enjoys re encoding all the movie and tv eps i want to watch on my touch (not), and i havent even started on the pricing :) I think the world been brainwashed!! its like a bad DR WHO ep.

I used to be pretty anti-Apple and as far as OS selection goes i will never use OSX (or any other Apple OS) for the simple reason that Apple will not accept that i must build my own PERSONAL Computer with MY OWN equipment selection to my exacting and changing specifications that are continually upgraded as technology changes. For some reason Apple chooses to insist that i cannot use their OS unless i use it on their crappy, cookie cutter, out of date, slow azz builds; sorry no thanks i will stick with Vista Ultimate and Ubuntu, thx.

With that being said i bought an ipod touch about 6 months ago and i have to say that i am in love with it and it totally kicks azz. I dont even listen to music on my PC anymore, and probably never will again unless its to sample stuff before i sync it.

I want the new iphone SO BAD it is really pissing me off. I have a contract with Sprint for 3 phones and i dont want to pay the contract cancellation fee on them. AT&T has an exclusive contract with Apple and they are the only provider you can get an iphone contract with in the USA. Why why WHY cant the other US providers also sell iphones? Apple always paints Microsoft as the “evil empire”, but they are worse with licensing than MS ever has been. AGAIN APPLE PISSING ME OFF TO NO END WITH THEIR BS LICENSING.

They have a cutting edge OS and a cutting edge (for USA) phone that could benefit so many people in the world, but they are excluding so much of the market why? For their own selfish gain.

  32. e08
    July 11th, 2008 | 02:09

Wow, it has GPS, so do all deciant phone nowadays! Plus no MMS (picture messaging) or video calls or video recording? This thing is so over priced and under featured it’s not funny! Who cares about a “super OS” for you phone? My N73 makes calls, video and voice, sends TXT and MMS, doesn’t do GPS cos it’s over a year old. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera and took the clearest shots for it’s day. The OS is super easy to use and has easy shortcuts for everything. It now costs $270 USD outright and can be easily unlocked from your network.

Now that’s a great phone for the price. In matter of fact, it does MORE than the 3G or 2G iPhones and cost NOTHING in comparison! iPhone’s are for fanboys and fanboys only. It’s a phone with flashy looks and controls but with no underlying power or features.

Fact: there are LOADS more phones for a fraction of the price that do LOADS more and are still VERY easy to use. You can’t deny that truthfully!

Honestly, if you have the money to spend on an iPhone why not spend money on the applications? I mean, I myself will never own an iPhone or anything similar. I did cave and buy an iPod, and I like it, but I went for what I needed in an MP3 player. That’s why I didn’t get the touch, and that’s also why I went back a generation. And at the moment the only thing I need a phone for is to make calls. I don’t need it to browse the internet, take pictures, find my way around the city, listen to music, watch videos, etc. There are other devices that already do that. Ever heard of a computer? Camera? GPS? MP3 Player? TV with DVD Player connected? I mean come on already. We already have all these devices why put them in something even smaller? So now I can watch my favorite movies on a 5″ screen instead of a 50″ screen? Sounds like a good idea…not. Oh, and lets not forget I can take a picture with the 2MP camera on my phone instead of my 8MP camera. The iPhone is just something no one really needs. It sounds cool at first, and then once you buy it, not so much. And the monthly price is too much anyway. $250/month? I can watch movies for FREE on my TV, take pictures for FREE on my camera, make calls for FREE on my home phone, listen to music for FREE on my iPod, and get GPS in my car with a much cheaper monthly bill. So why would I want it all packed into something much smaller and then pay $250 for it? Doesn’t make sense to me. I think anyone that buys one only has it to say, “Look what I have that was $200! I must be better than you!” I’ll be the one saving up for college tuition, and while I’m on my way to Harvard you’ll be sitting home talking on your iPhone that you had to have that costs $3,000 a year. Good for you! I’ll be sure to give you a tip when you are my waiter/waitress at a very expensive restaurant.

personally i like the iphone, but its not something i would die over… it has a great user interface, and some smart features.. but i hardly use those kinda features. same with the other smartphones. however i do fine the iphone to be the better smartphone, just because of its simplicity. used to own a qtek 9100, and well as much as it could do, it was to much of a hassel.

however back to the topic of the post, great stuff this app store, can’t wait to upload the remote app. be able to control my itunes from my touch over the wireless lan. quite nice

@5 : I did buy my iphone out of contract and then I jailbroke it plus I also unlocked it. I never had AT&t and I bought my iphone and in that same day I had it on T-Mobile with my sim card. No need to speak with any cell phone carriers or pay more money to change my plan just to add a different phone. Which I never bought a phone from my actual cell phone company, I just buy unlocked phones or like my iphone i unlocked. My butt smells, gotta take a shower!

I own an iPhone that is unlocked and jailbroken. I use T-Mobile and my bill is $79.00 with the data plan. Its a great device (once unlocked and jailbroken). Sure it has its little idiosyncrasies that can annoy you, but I have yet to use a “smart” phone that didn’t. In this game, there are no “perfect” devices; but the iPhone comes close. Otherwise manufacturers would be looking for a Killer, not an iPhone Killer. Stop hating…now even YOU can afford one.

I have noticed that there are many phones coming out on different cell phone carriers that look just like the iphone. Many people walk around with them, and I look at mine and I see the same style, only difference is that it’s a different company that made it. They all the sudden started making touch screen phones now, look at commercials and u see these phones that are look alikes and speak highly about. This phone changed the cell phone standars, and many people buying the look alikes speak bad about the iphone, but what they have are wanna be iphones. What they need to do is learn how to hack an iphone n give it a try with ure cell phone carrier and u will see the difference. A buddy from work bought a look alike, I gave it a try and it felt like I was limited to things I had no interest of having on a phone. He just received that phone in the mail and wanted to sell it to buy an actual iphone. My butt keeps smelling, gotta spray my nalgas with after shave!

    http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iphone-info.jsp#0faqSection0

So the cheapest option is $69.99/month (with lots of minutes in it) which becomes a lot of money over 24 months => 1680 + 199 (8gb iphone) = $1880

I doubt any single phone is worth that much.
